Tips for Choosing Childcare

Pay attention to reviews and recommendations

If other parents are passing along their praise for a particular preschool or childcare facility, it’s worth checking out. It says a lot when families that are currently using the service are not only enjoying it but recommending it to others. On the flip side, if you are hearing negative reviews, proceed with caution.

Observe the staff and children who currently attend

Whether you pop in for an unexpected visit or go on an official tour, observe how the staff, teachers, and children are interacting with one another. Do the staff seem gentle, loving, firm, and patient with the children? Is there a good balance between structured and self-guided play? Do the children seem engaged, at ease, and happy? Kids don’t hide their emotions very well, so if they seem relaxed and appear to be enjoying themselves, they are probably being well looked after.

Check that their standards match yours

When looking at potential childcare options, you want to be certain their values and practices measure up to your expectations. Be sure to ask about cleanliness, discipline, rules, screens, and mealtime and naptime.

Entrusting your children to someone else’s care can be an overwhelming step as a parent or guardian. If you do your homework ahead of time, however, you should be able to make the choice with confidence.
